A very incomplete list of music that I like, divided in broad categories.
Various
- Portray -- really relaxed jazz music from a bunch of students from Delft.
- Baz Luhrmann -- if you count that as music, it's more like "sound tracks". But they're good!
- Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds -- absolutely depressing ballads, gotta love it.
- Lou Reed -- especially his album "Berlin".
- Tori Amos -- absolutely wonderful songs.
Classical Music
- Arvo Pärt -- Wonderful, deep music. If you get the chance, watch the movie Heaven, which has Pärt's "Für Alina" for a soundtrack.
- Philip Glass -- varying quality, but at times absolutely brilliant.
- Gustav Mahler -- Second symphony, the choir at the end. Performed it myself once, never got it out of my system.
In general, I love 20th century classical music, and I can't really stand anything older than that except for pretty much everything written by J.S. Bach. The man was a genius.
Symphonic Metal
- Delain -- Dutch symphonic metal band, with Within Temptation and Nightwish influences.
- Autumn -- Dutch symphonic metal band with a pretty unique style.
- Nightwish -- Finnish metal band.
- Edenbridge -- Austrian symphonic band.
- Elis -- Symphonic metal band from Liechtenstein.
- Angra -- Brazilian symphonic metal band, very much over-the-top but sometimes also very inspired.
- Ayreon -- Project of Dutch symphonic metal genius Arjen Anthony Lucassen.
- Apocalyptica -- Metal on cellos.
