Notes from Richmond, Virginia

I'm in Richmond, Virginia this week, visiting a client. I hadn't expected this, it just suddenly came up on Monday that there was some trouble with the client's setup and they needed someone to go out and do some troubleshooting. That's going quite OK, even hough I'm having to make 13-hour days and I'm also working on Saturday just to get the stuff done. Anyway, i'll be writing some notes from my first time in the States (apart from a visit to NY city in 2002, which turns out to be less than representative).

The flight here was bumpy, to say the least. We flew over Greenland for a bit, beautiful views from the window, I'll put the photos online when I'm back. When we were flying over Quebec we started having pretty heavy turbulence, the stewardesses were barely keeping themselves from falling on top of the passengers when they were asked to strap themselves in. I had a layover in Atlanta (flying Delta Airlines), which is an airport which is typically american, I guess: a long, straight central walkway with concourses branching out, like an old-fashioned TV antenna. I did almost miss my connecting flight: I had 1.5 hours, and immigration took 30+ minutes (one minute actual work, 29 minutes waiting, and it wasn't even busy); customs took about 10 minutes; then there was the security re-check where I had to take off my shoes and everything; then it turns out that my flight was at the other side of the airport, six concourses down. I was just barely on time, thanks to the airport train that runs along the central axis of the airport.

(To be continued...)
